Starlings of Fort Mason

In 2005, I was working with a group of printmakers at facilities in Fort Mason, on San Francisco’s waterfront. I’d planned to restrict myself to black monotypes, and while walking along the water deliberating about subject matter, I began to notice the fearless little black birds that bopped around the piers and parking lots. They’d allow me to come fairly close to get quick sketches, and I took photos to bring back into the studio to work up the prints.

The graphic black birds lent themselves nicely to the subtractive medium of monotyping.
